The Global Media and Internet Concentration Project is pleased to share Western Finance and the Rise of Chinese Tech Power, a policy report commissioned by the British Academy and prepared for the British Academy and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Authored by Lianrui Jia, who works with Dr. Min Jiang on the GMICP’s China team, the report draws on GMICP data alongside company filings, financial disclosures, market intelligence, and other sources to examine how Western financial networks helped finance and scale China’s major technology platforms. It focuses on the relationship between global finance, platform expansion, and the changing dynamics of US–China technological competition.

The report shows how companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu have been shaped not only by Chinese state policy, but also by access to international capital markets, Western financial institutions, offshore corporate structures, and global investment networks. It also considers how these relationships are changing as geopolitical tensions, investment screening, and financial fragmentation increase.

Commissioned to inform public discussion and policymakers, the report is another example of how GMICP data contributes to research with real-world policy relevance.
