Dr. Hendrik Theine, a researcher with the Global Media and Internet Concentration Project, recently delivered the keynote address at the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE) 2025 pre-conference in Athens.
Talk Title: Mediated Discourses, Digital Capitalism, and the Struggle for Socio-Ecological Futures
How does digital capitalism shape our economies, politics, and visions of the future? Using concepts from cultural political economy and critical media studies, Dr. Hendrik Theine’s keynote highlighted the discursive and material power of Big Tech companies. He showed how today’s online culture restructured lived experiences, politics, economics, and culture. Building on findings from the Global Media and Internet Concentration Project, he underscored Big Tech’s market and structural power and its drive toward monopolies and proprietary markets. Finally, Dr. Theine discussed the (dire) implications for a socio-ecological transformation.
