A report produced by the Finland research team of the Global Media and Internet Research Project

This report analyzes Finland’s media and internet markets from 2018-2023, revealing a highly concentrated landscape dominated by a few major players. Finland’s networked media economy grew 14% to EUR 12.05 billion by 2023, driven by surging digital advertising (up 67%) and data centers (up 40%), while traditional media declined. The country’s small population of 5.6 million contributes to market concentration, with telecom giants Elisa and Telia, game developer Supercell, and media company Sanoma leading the sector. US tech companies maintain near-monopolistic control over core internet services.

While traditional sectors remain tightly concentrated, digital markets like online video and gaming show increasing competition. However, the report identifies a critical challenge: severe data gaps in tracking digital platforms and internet services, worsened by Statistics Finland’s recent decision to discontinue media statistics. This lack of comprehensive data significantly hampers policymaking and regulation at a crucial time when understanding media concentration is essential for maintaining democratic discourse and managing the digital transformation.
