A report produced by the Indian research team of the Global Media and Internet Research Project
The report examines media concentration in India from 2019-2021. It details ownership, market share and concentration across two infrastructural domains (telecoms and Internet services) and two media content domains: (audiovisual media content and newspapers). It highlights how digitization and mobile internet are driving integration of the Indian media economy, which grew 21% to $66.52 billion in revenue during this period. However, growth was uneven, with telecommunications/internet infrastructure and online services booming while newspapers declined. This has increased concentration in media infrastructure/distribution and cross-ownership between content areas. The report maps monopolistic trends and interactions between domestic and global media interests, while also covering challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing gaps in data-driven analysis of Indian media markets.
