A new article by Guillermo Mastrini, Martín Becerra, Ana Bizberge, Ornela Carboni, Agustín Espada, and Florencia Sosa examines the economic concentration of digital platforms operating in the Southern Cone between 2018 and 2023. Focusing on revenue and user data, the study explores how transnational platforms are reshaping local communication and media markets.
The article extends the work of the Global Media and Internet Concentration Project (GMICP), complementing earlier research by the same team on audiovisual concentration in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, while contributing new evidence about the growing importance of digital platforms in the region.
By placing local market developments within a broader international framework, the article helps identify common patterns of platform expansion as well as the specific conditions shaping digital markets in the Southern Cone. This research supports GMICP’s larger goal of providing reliable, comparable data for researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the public.
