A report produced by the Australian research team of the Global Media and Internet Research Project

The report analyzes market concentration across 12 telecommunications, internet, media and online services markets in Australia from 2019 to 2022. It finds that most of these markets are moderately to highly concentrated, with major Australian players like Telstra, News Corp, and public broadcasters dominating traditional sectors, while global tech giants like Alphabet/Google, Meta, Microsoft and Apple dominate core internet services and online advertising. Alphabet and Meta have risen to become two of the biggest companies operating across these sectors in Australia based on total revenue. The findings reflect long-standing media consolidation trends in Australia that are among the highest internationally.
